During the winter, 2006, Kip got into a serious patch of cholla while tracking and apparently had a reaction to them (we had to muzzle him to pull out all the spines). He was licking his feet raw. Finally, I had thyroid testing done -- all clear, we altered his diet (to ostrich OMG), I was bathing him daily with an allergy shampoo, and he just kept on licking, so, as a last resort, we put him on prednisone for about six weeks -- build up and then back down. It stopped the licking and he hasn't started back up.

So, we stay away from the spines. I'm really not a believer in steroid use until all other options are exhausted. I'm hoping we won't have the problem again -- and we really avoid cactus and cholla. We tracked a lot last winter and into the spring and summer without a renewal of the licking.

Scout had itchy feet for a long time - nothing I tried seemed to fix it. After I while I decided it has just become habit to her and left it alone. At some point she stopped chewing them - but I don't have a clue what changed.

That's ok, we call Brady "The Boot", which is short for buttmunch...so you're not going to be damaging him there with the Lumpy thing.

Working on the lumps here too. I can't afford surgical removal for humans! LOL
