So, Leslie is lending me her whelping box. Which she’s never used, but “said” she put together once when she got it.
Turns out, at least by the time it got to me, there was at least 1 piece missing in the floor. The directions were…unhelpful, but no matter which way I tried things I couldn’t manage to make a complete floor.
So, off to Lowe’s I went and instead of getting 3 pieces of floor (why wouldn’t you want a solid 1-piece floor?) I had them cut a single sheet. Then I decided that painted wood would probably be difficult to keep clean and sanitary, so I went wandering in the tile department and found these standard Armstrong commercial floor tiles. You know, the ones you saw in your school throughout your entire childhood.
For $.66 each, I really couldn’t beat it. 16 of those, plus some adhesive and a little bio-blocking caulk to fill in the inevitable gaps since I’m not a flooring person by trade. And voila!
It might not break down quite as small now because of the solid floor piece. And hopefully Leslie doesn’t mind the lilac color…that’s what you get when the 4-year old helps you pick paint. Although as Leslie did point out, purple is the color of good ribbons!
Without and with the pig rails.

Wow! That looks a WHOLE lot better than when it was stuck behind my couch in the dog room. And, yes, the directions that came with it left something to be desired. Guess when you get it from eBay . . .
Many good wishes for the inaugural use!

Teach those pups from a young age what the important color is! Looks good.

I think that’s a “girl color” — very cool! Can’t wait for Lizzie to fill it up.

La di da, lavender
The babies should show up nicely against the lavender background. Do we have a count yet?

It looks great!
Was it difficult to put together? That might be a project I take on this summer… I like being creative, just hate spending the money to do it!
Can’t wait to see the beautiful babies that will fill that box!!

Ohhhh – How nice. I have a dura-whelp bow that I love, but I need something more substantial for older pups. I have been after him to build a pen with rabbit wire and a tile floor. Now I can show him how nice that would work. Tick Tock – when is Lizzie due?

Lavender is a wonderfully soothing color and I’m sure once all the pushing is done, Lizze will appreciate Charlie’s thoughtfulness. Still excited and showing “pregnant mommy” pics to all who will slow down long enough to look. All of our friends say how gorgeous Lizzie is and how handsome is Pilot. Gonna have beautiful baby cardis for sure.

Is that a commercial or home-made box from Ebay? I like it! And good job on the floor. I, too, need a bigger box for bigger puppies. Short sides meant momma could hop in from any side, but also mean that puppies (read: Stella) could escape pretty early on.

Yeah Leslie bought it from eBay. I scrubbed the inside, which had a thin coat of white paint, and repainted each piece individually. Then put it all together and put the floor down. It’s 40 x 40 so should be plenty roomy, for a while at least.

No, not hard. I didn’t build it, nor did Leslie, but it wouldn’t be hard to make one like this. You’d need a drill and some way to cut out the door…everything else you could have cut at Lowe’s or Home Depot into the size you needed.

Pig rails are amazing. The puppies learn about them pretty quickly and use them like little puppy subway tunnels around Mom. And they move shocking fast!
