Today’s Results
The weather today was so beautiful that I almost hated to spend it indoors at a dog show in a dusty horse barn! Normally it’s either cold, rainy, or both at this cluster, but we were gifted with drop-dead gorgeous weather today. Clear, sunny, and in the 70’s, with fall leaves abounding everywhere. I don’t intend to go to the show tomorrow…a compromise with my husband who really wanted to play golf instead of babysit the kiddos again…so maybe we can get out and enjoy the weather then.
Lizzie was Best of Opposite today, winning over the very lovely Scout. I find myself conflicted about that because there’s no doubt that Scout is very pretty, in fabulous coat and condition, and shown very well by her handler, and usually I’m cheering for her.
But we’ll take the ribbon anyway!
After BIS there was a puppy B match so naturally I entered Nash. I even did a little mini-grooming job on him, to get him used to the idea of being groomed at a show, but he thought that rolling in barn dust was the best way to get noticed by the judge. What do you know, turns out he was right! We were the only Cardigan entered, but he won a puppy herding group 1.
And most importantly, seemed to have a great time! But is one. tired. puppy…we didn’t get home until nearly 9 pm!
Agility Dawg?
So most of you know that in addition to conformation, I like to dabble in agility. Zach and I had good success doing agility, but ever since then I haven’t had good luck finding my next agility partner…Brady had WAY too much drive and was very difficult to keep from injuring himself…Leo had the drive and willing to please attitude but not the body health for that kind of training. Lizzie is very promising to be a good, steady partner, much to my surprise! She does fine but I wouldn’t call her “agile”. She gets around the course and jumps without trouble, and even has a good bit of enthusiasm for it which was very exciting to me as she is mostly a couch tater. We’ll continue with training after the 1st of the year and maybe she’ll be ready to compete by the National.
But her son? Nash? Yeah, HE might be the one I’ve really been searching for. I’ve never had a puppy as flat-out athletic as he is. He’s fast, smart, and wow can he jump! No, I obviously don’t encourage this LOL. But as anyone who has raised a puppy knows, sometimes things are out of your control! I have to keep a close eye on him (and yes, especially on grooming tables!). I KNOW this didn’t come from his mama, so thanks dad!
This weekend we have a local dog show about 20 minutes from my house. I know Heidi finally decided to dust off her special and bring out Rush, I think Scout is going to be there, and I entered Lizzie 2 days just for fun and to support our local shows. There’s also a puppy match on Saturday! I’m probably most excited about that part and will see if I can get someone to video us again for fun. Lizzie is still not in full coat so I’m not holding out much hope for her…she’s also due in season but no signs yet. Maybe she remembers too well what happened the LAST time she came into season.
Yes, it's the most fabulous princess nightgown ever.
This doesn't really showcase his jumping ability but is cute anyway.
7 so far…make that 8…now 9…maybe that's it
Started at 4 am this morning. So far 4 girls (2 brindle 2 black) and 3 boys (all brindle). One of the black girls is marked just like daddy, except her slash is on the show side instead of the off side. All the rest are flashy and evenly marked so far.
#8 is another brindle girl, with beautiful markings and bright brindle.
#9 is another black girl, gorgeous markings. Slow to start, so good thoughts as we rubrubrubrub.
And I think we’re done. #9 has come around from limp and unresponsive to pink and squeaking, but is still gasping a bit. I’m hopeful.
Lizzie seems to think she’s done. 2 placentas still inside
Not yet
Nope, no puppies yet. Her temp did drop significantly today for a couple hours before going back to where it was. She’s very, very uncomfortable and I see some other signs, but no labor yet that I can tell.
Tonite sometime? Tomorrow? Surely by tomorrow…
A watched dog…
…never whelps.
I feel like she’s getting close based on behavior and a couple other signs. Waiting impatiently for a temp drop though!
Le Box De Whelp
So, Leslie is lending me her whelping box. Which she’s never used, but “said” she put together once when she got it.
Turns out, at least by the time it got to me, there was at least 1 piece missing in the floor. The directions were…unhelpful, but no matter which way I tried things I couldn’t manage to make a complete floor.
So, off to Lowe’s I went and instead of getting 3 pieces of floor (why wouldn’t you want a solid 1-piece floor?) I had them cut a single sheet. Then I decided that painted wood would probably be difficult to keep clean and sanitary, so I went wandering in the tile department and found these standard Armstrong commercial floor tiles. You know, the ones you saw in your school throughout your entire childhood.
For $.66 each, I really couldn’t beat it. 16 of those, plus some adhesive and a little bio-blocking caulk to fill in the inevitable gaps since I’m not a flooring person by trade. And voila!
It might not break down quite as small now because of the solid floor piece. And hopefully Leslie doesn’t mind the lilac color…that’s what you get when the 4-year old helps you pick paint. Although as Leslie did point out, purple is the color of good ribbons!
Without and with the pig rails.
Alright alright
This is the best I can do. I made a big blank white screen on my computer and taped it to that, then took a picture with my camera and fiddled with it in photoshop. Interesting ’cause I went back to look at Kate’s, and they are much more calcified and bright, but hers was taken 4 days before whereas this is 9 or so. The “x” marks are from the vet and mark skulls. The “?” in the lower right is the 7th, he initially wasn’t sure but by the end we all thought it was one too. There’s another possible “?” in the upper left that I don’t think is one. But, there seem to be a good number of spines in the upper leftish/middle of her belly that I’m not sure have corresponding heads…
You should be able to click on them to make them bigger. I included two different contrast settings, it seemed like I could see some stuff better at different contrasts.
Relieved
X-ray this morning says 7, possibly 8-9 puppies. She was listening after all!
I tried to scan in the x-ray, because they don’t have digital. No luck though, bummer!
