Fluffy?
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on October 15, 2008
No. Clearly, Lizzie has a very normal and correct coat. But I admit that I was curious about carrier status since Lizzie’s dam DOES carry a lot of coat…not that she is a fluffy, but she definitely has a lot of coat to work with. As does at least one of Lizzie’s half-sisters.
But Lizzie came back as N/N Clear, meaning that she is not a fluffy carrier.
It's that time

The girl is in season. Just in time for shows! Joy.
At least she has always been regular with her cycle. Hopefully that bodes well for her fertility…? LOL

Another one out of the way

Lizzie’s test results for the new DM (degenerative myelopathy) test have come back NORMAL. Yay! I mostly decided to submit her in order to support further study of this disease, as it’s still unclear exactly what breeders should be doing with results…but I’m glad to know that it’s unlikely she’ll ever develop DM.
From the documentation of results:
NORMAL (N/N): This dog is homozygous N/N, with two normal copies of the gene. In the seven breeds studied at the University of Missouri in depth so far, dogs with test results of N/N (Normal) have never been confirmed to have DM. This dog can only transmit the normal gene to its offspring, and it is unlikely that this dog or its offspring will ever develop DM.
I sent off a fluffy test, just so I know. Trying to get a CERF around here is somewhat harder…unless someone does a show clinic, I have to drive 1.5 hours to have it done. These days, it’s really hard to find time for that! Maybe next month.
Lumpy no more

I just signed my paycheck over to the vet’s office/boarding facility, LOL. We went to the beach for a week so there was 9 days of boarding in there, as well as anesthesia, teeth cleaning, and a fatty lump removal for Brady. Ouch! We’ve left the lump alone ever since it appeared a few years ago (after biopsy to determine it was nothing to worry about, of course), but it recently started growing again and was getting a little…gross.
Since it was right under his chin where he likes to be scratched, well we really had no choice.
On another note, anyone have ideas on what could be causing the old man to suddenly lick his paws to death? This was before the boarding, so it’s not stress. No food changes, although I guess they could have changed the formula. He’s getting Pro Plan Selects Salmon & Brown Rice, and has been for a good while. I went and bought a bag of their Turkey formula, which is the only other one they have that doesn’t contain corn (which I KNOW bothers him). I can’t say for sure whether his paws look better, worse, or the same since being boarded for so long. He’s been doing this for probably about a month now.
They don't know how we worry

Since Leo has gone to his new home and gotten past the settling in period, I’ve had very little contact from his new family. Which normally wouldn’t really worry me all that much (while families that keep in touch are WONDERFUL, I don’t expect that most pet families will send updates very frequently). But in this case, I had emailed several times, and Penni had called and emailed a couple of times as well. Just wanted to see how he was doing, whether there were any problems, etc. With no response, you start to worry. What if something happened to him and they just don’t want to tell me? I’d never forgive myself.
Thankfully, Penni’s involvement with the reading program means that once the school year and program started up again, she could find Leo’s family and inquire about his welfare in person. And I’m thrilled to say that he is doing GREAT, they adore him and in fact, after dogsitting him for a week, his brother went out and bought a corgi. A tailless one! As she said…“They wanted a Leo. They didn’t understand that there is only one.”
I can’t tell you how much better I will sleep tonite. And hopefully, now that they know how it can make us worry, they’ll at least let me know that he’s ok when I ask.

Possible husband?

Dixie (Lizzie’s breeder) and I have been discussing sires for a summer litter with Lizzie next year. We have different tastes at times, so finding a single dog to agree on isn’t always easy! LOL But Dixie gets a puppy also, and was nice enough to sell me this lovely little girl, so we will capitalize on our common ground.
4 days later…

And they’ve finally restored my account. Argh.
No, I still don’t know what happened exactly. I got that original message about the economy. *scratches head* And then I got some messages about them resetting my password and about unauthorized access to my account. Swell. Not sure what they decided in the end but then they sent me the forms I had to fill out and FAX back in order to restore my account.
Oh, and 2 of my characters are GONE. Thank goodness, not my highest level pally. But my druid that I was leveling up is gone! Bastads!
A hopeful yay

It will be 4-6 weeks before I hear from OFA, but Lizzie’s x-rays looked very good! The vet’s opinion was a very strong Good rating, and he has seen a lotta hips and a lotta corgi hips. OFA rating aside, I trust his thoughts and he was very positive about her x-rays.
I heard from her breeder that her sister’s hips also looked great.
Check one off the list. Now to find a darn CERF clinic somewhere.
